Through the eyes …

You know, sometimes it takes seeing something through the eyes of a child to truly appreciate.  Take my car, for instance.  My ride is a 2008 Toyota Corolla Sport.  I call him Handsome Fellow beause, let’s admit, he is.  But he’s not the sporty, black Acura Integra of my past (yes, there was a day when they were sporty), nor the cream with black racing stripes Mini Cooper of my future.  I didn’t buy Handsome Fellow for speed, slick handling, or a sassy ride.  I bought him because he is a grown up car.

Then I went to dinner at a friend’s house …

This, apparently, was the first time my friend’s six-year-old daughter caught sight of my car.  She looked out the window and could not believe her eyes.  We looked out the window and looked for another car.  There was none.  You see, we looked out and saw a good investment – four doors, air bags all around, excellent gas mileage.  She looked out and saw a thing of beauty.  It’s silver, and sparkles in the sun – and look at those lights!

I took her for a ride around the block.  We opened the sunroof, put on some tunes, and motored on our way.  Even her neighborhood, it seemed, appeared more resplendent – simply because she was viewing it from the windows of such a fine carriage.  I imagine there will be day - before bedtime – when we’ll take real ride.   Maybe down to the road to Fancy Freeze.  After all, a wonderful ride should end with a wonderful treat – wouldn’t you agree?

The sweet life…

My mum and I share a couple of girlfriends - K and T – who love a good theme as much as we do.  So a couple years ago we started a tradition.  The birthday girl chooses a movie – and then we try to find a restaurant that goes with the movie.  Saturday was K’s celebration.  She chose Julie & Julia (stay tuned for the review); we chose a charming little bistro called “La Vie en Rose.”

Good food.  People you love.  Now that, my friends, is the sweet life!

Who says that?

Have you ever noticed how some people don’t have a filter?  Case in point: yesterday–at church no less– a lady came up to and the conversation went something like this …

Her:  How are you doing?

Me:  Good.

Her:  Have you found a job yet?

Me:  Nope.  Not yet …

Her:  Well, I guess you’re mom will just have to work two jobs.

I laughed – a light, nervous laugh – because, quiet frankly, that’s where she lost me.  I couldn’t grasp what my mom had to do with me being unemployed.  And then it hit me.  GASP!  How rude

Considering we were in church and all, it’s a good thing I have a filter.  Most of the time.

Here’s to a beautiful Sunday…

Rainy days

rainy_days

I’ve been waiting for this day for months.  MONTHS I tell you.  A laid back, lazy day.  No deadlines.  Nowhere I have to be.  Nothing I have to do.  You would think it wouldn’t be so hard to find – a day such as today – but alas, my friends, not so.  Even for a single gal, minus a full-time job, empty hours remain elusive.  Kind of like an enjoyable blind date - you may have heard about them, but you’ve never quite experienced them for yourself.

But today is mine.  All mine

It began as it should, with me and a steaming cup of coffee, lounging in a tub full of bubbles, listening to the rain fall.  That’s right – rain.  In the desert.  In August.  The mere thought makes me giddy.  From here there’s just no knowing where the day might take me – maybe I’ll read a little or bake a little.  Maybe I’ll write an honest-to-goodness letter and pop it in the post.  Maybe – just maybe – I’ll be inspired to work on one of my stories.  Now, wouldn’t that be something?
