October’s Party

By George Cooper

October gave a party

The leaves by hundreds came

 The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,

And leaves of every name.

The Sunshine spread a carpet,

And everything was grand,

Miss Weather led the dancing,

Professor Wind the band.

The Chestnuts came in yellow,

The Oaks in crimson dressed;

The lovely Misses Maple

In scarlet looked their best;

All balanced to their partners,

And gaily fluttered by;

The sight was like a rainbow

New fallen from the sky.

Then, in the rustic hollow,

At hide-and-seek they played,

The party closed at sundown,

And everybody stayed.

Professor Wind played louder;

They flew along the ground;

And then the party ended

In jolly “hands around.”

halloween_pups

Can you even stand this pic?!  Seriously.  It’s more than this girl can stand!  I want to laugh … and kiss this face … and then laugh again.  Poor, poor pups.  But I must say, I’m a bit envious of the rug.  I bought a wig for my costume this year.  It’s suppose to be pin-curl style – I beg to differ.  It looks as though a small animal crawled atop my head and died.  Terrible disappointment really.

And that may not be my only issue.  I tried on my dress and it was touch and go my friends, touch and go.  I thought to myself, Why, in the world, would I purchase a small?!  Then I looked at the tag: One size fits most. Sigh.  The stress of it all makes me want to eat a donut.

Needless to say, be prepared for some alarming photos come Monday.  Pretty sure.

W

hat in the world?!  Yeah, I’ve really got nothing to follow that there exclamation – I just wanted an excuse to use this drop cap*. Isn’t it fabulous?!  What in the world was the first thing that popped into my mind, Whoa dude was a close second.  So many wonderful words begin with the letter “W” …

Winner – Wonder – Wander – Wabble – Wacky – WAFFLES – Waters – Welcome -  Whim – Whiskers – Will – Willow – Wild – Window – Wine – Wisdom – Wish – Wooded – World – Worship – Wedding – Whifflers – Wit – Wigannowns – Wink – Whiz – Write.

Put them together and they just might tell a story that goes something like this – Waffling whifflers waded waters while wacky wigannowns wandered willowed woods.

And that’s all I’ve got to say about it.

halloween

I’ve always had a certain soft spot for Halloween.   You heard me.  Halloween … as in H-A-double L-O-W-double E-N!   Growing up, we would dress up in homemade costumes before heading to grama’s for chili and cornbread.  We’d trick-or-treat in her neighborhood before visiting my other grama.  My grandparents always made special goody bags for us grandkids; neighbors always looked forward to our visits, tisking and tasking at how we’d grown from year-to-year.

It was tradition.

And here’s the thing:  it was a tradition for believers and non-believers alike.   My grandparents may have thought dancing was of the devil, but by george they had chocolate for trick-or-treaters.  Every year.  Good chocolate – even if it meant my grama running to the store three times to replace the candy my grandpa ate.

Christians today make such a fuss over Halloween – refusing even, to call it such.  Now I realize, evil things do transpire.  But shouldn’t that be all the more reason to be goodness and light?  I don’t recall Jesus … Peter … Paul ever saying, “Run for the hills!  There’s evil afoot!”  Quite the opposite, actually.  Paul called Ephesus – a den of iniquity if ever there was one – a “wide door of opportunity.”

I think sometimes today we take such pains to avoid evil, that we avoid opportunity as well.  Being the salt of the earth is not always being involved in constructed ministry.  It’s certainly not holing ourselves up.  More often than not, being salt is entwined in the little things, when no one but God is looking.  I dare say, sometimes being salt is a welcome light, a warm smile, and the best chocolate in the neighborhood…
