Will work for free

I’ve been busy.  So busy.  I was telling this to my brother the other day when he inquired what, exactly, made me so…our conversation went something like this:

Me:  Well, I’m working on two news sites/blogs.  Quite exciting …

Josh:  Are you getting paid for said sites?

Me:  No.  But maybe I’ll be able to pick up some advertising at some point.

Me:  I’m also working on my first fundraising letter.

Josh:  Are you getting paid for that?

Me:  No, no I am not.   But it’s a good cause.  And it will be good experience … good for the ol’ portfolio and all that …

Me:  Then there’s the memoir – I need to be working on that.

Josh:  You’re not getting paid for that one either, are you?

Me:  No sir.

Me:  And somewhere amidst it all I need to update my copywriting website.

Josh:  While you’re at it, you might as well add “pro bono” to your business cards.

Sigh.  It’s true.  This year I have done far more “freebies” than actual paid assignments.  Still, I remain hopeful that there will come a day when I will, indeed, get paid!

In the meantime, back to my pro bono work …

To the Lord in prayer …

I’m interupting my reguarly scheduled post to call in the troops.  Not long ago my cousin’s wife delivered their baby boy prematurely.  And now we know why.  Last week, when he was finally settling in at home, his big sister – Lily – was diagnosed with Leukemia.  I’m sure any of you with children have an inkling of what they are going through.  Thankfully, we know the One who holds tomorrow.  And He knows us.  He knows.  He knows this little girl with big brown eyes and a smile that can light up the room.

So when you think of it, please join me in praying for little Lily and her family …

  • For health and wellness for all.  Lily and Isaac are both immune compromised.  It is especially important that their caretakers remain healthy.
  • For work schedules.  My cousin is hoping to change his work schedule to a 4-day 10-hour work week to accomodate traveling to Portland every Friday for treatments.
  • For a positive response to treatment.  Lily faces two years of treatment.  The doctors warned that one of her meds will make her extremely difficult to live with (think major PMS); they warned there’s a possibility she will stop walking because of soreness and weakness in her legs and will have to relearn.  Let’s pray that will not happen.
  • For additional health coverage.  Lily may qualify for the Oregon Health Plan which would be a tremendous help with medical expenses.
  • For blessings.  I pray they would find unexpected blessings in the comfort and support of friends and family.  Friends have already offered their home each week for when they travel for treatments.
  • For peace.  For strength.  For comfort.  Finally, I pray the peace that passes ALL understanding would be theirs.  I pray for restful sleep – and joy in the morning – that they might face this with every ounce of their strength.

Thank you!

A long winter’s rest

dregs

Is it just me or is October little more than a blur?  I can’t believe we have but two weeks left of the month.  Thankfully, I had a mellow weekend for a change.  A weekend to sit back and enjoy … a weekend and get stuff done …

Friends and food.  I am eternally pathetic in the fall/winter.  The draw of candlelight, bubble baths, warm jammies, and good books is simply more than I can resist.  I don’t even try.  I snuggle in for a long winter’s rest as I wave goodbye to friends ’til Spring.  This might be why why I was struck with the deer-in-the-headlights look as we were being seated for dinner on Friday.  The greeter asked if we were doing anything fun that night.  ”Hello!  We’re at the Cheesecake Factory … at 8 o’clock … in October … how much more fun can a person have?!“

Sweet dreams.  The weekend was beautiful – blue skies, sunshine, warmth even!  And other than Friday night,  I didn’t have a single thing planned.  No weddings, showers, or birthday parties.  This, of course, could mean but one thing: yard work.  There were tomato patches to be cleared, sunflower stocks to be uprooted, broke down, and bundled, flowers to be deadheaded, and weeds – oh the weeds! – to be pulled.  As I dug, I realized how little I had been outside this year.  I’ve watered, yes.  But most of the time I’ve been at this here computer, desperately trying to get my groove.  I’ve missed the sunshine.  I’ve missed the fresh air.  I’ve even missed the work.  So as I put my yard to bed, I promised to work diligently in the coming months … so we might frolic come spring!

Here’s to Autumn adventures…

A stroller gone wrong

Tired of listening to me ramble on and on?!  Well today’s your lucky day, my friend … today’s your lucky day …

Today I’m sending you on to Pancakes and French Fries.  Why, you ask?!  In today’s post she tells of ”almost killing” her young son as they went for a walk – on level ground.  What?  Why yes, I imagine that may very well be why I don’t have children.  Thanks for bringing it up

Anyway, it’s some good times, let me tell ya.  And what could be better than chortling at the low point of another?  Yeah, I can’t think of anything either …
