Did you happen to catch Google’s tribute to Roger Hargreaves, the creator of Mr. Men, yesterday? The illustrations made me smile. My brother and I had a few of the books. As far as I can recall, they were neither my favorite, nor my least favorite. I liked them just fine.
Then one day our parents made the mistake of taking us to a restaurant that gave Mr. Men figurines with each kid’s meal.
Suddenly, the characters jumped off the page–and I was in love.
My brother thought they were pretty great too. Chances are good we drove my parents to near insanity with our endless requests to eat at that particular restaurant. But what could be done? We had many a character to collect.
You know, all the characters began with Mr. Tickle. One day Roger Hargreaves’ son asked, “What does a tickle look like?” The rest, as they say, is history.
Funny how that works, isn’t it? A simple question can spark a phenomenon; Experiencing something yourself can make it come alive; an internet search can morph into a trip down memory lane. Guess it just goes to prove that no matter how you arrive–straight away or topsy turvy–it’s all very extraordinary!
