Unless you’re into extreme sports, a trip to Twin Falls, Idaho is not exactly something you bluster on about. As a matter of fact, so much as mutter your intent, and it will be met with a severe, ‘Why ever would you do that?’
More oft than not, your answer will include a friend or family member.
So it was with us–we went to visit a friend and celebrate a birthday. We chatted and laughed, ate good food and drank festive libations. You know, the usual. We also drove about, visiting ghosts of the past. Our first stop: the second homestead, where a couple of mules ran right up to say hello . . .
Aren’t they just the cutest? I wanted to gather them up and take them home, but I wasn’t sure they’d fit in the back seat.
From there, we visited the town where our friend grew up. The years have not be kind; we couldn’t help pity the poor, lonely buildings . . .
While our friend attended Mass, we meandered through the city park . . .
Where we snapped photos and perused a car show . . .
Now, we’ve been to more than our share of car shows, but I’ve got to say, I’ve never seen that many shift sticks adorned with skulls or gun handles. We were feeling a little out of place when someone started their car and revved the engine, right as we walked by; we came (*) this close to hitting the deck. Luckily, they were kind enough not to laugh. We, on the other hand, couldn’t help ourselves.
Of course, a trip to Twin Falls would not be complete without a visit to the Perrine Bridge . . .
We aided a few tourists in their photo ops, watched a few BASE jumpers do their thing. You know, Perrine is one of the only places in the US where it’s not only legal to BASE jump, you don’t need a permit. While I didn’t get any pictures, you can get a sense of it here.
Gah, just watching them is enough to give me a heart condition!
Once we got our fill of the adrenaline rush, we walked the canyon rim. See that dirt ramp, to the right? That’s where Evel Knievel attempted his jump in 1974 (I’m a virtual fount of knowledge) . . .
All in all, not a bad way to spend the final weekend of August!
