I am quite finished with this incessant cold, thank you very much.
The Intern, it seems, feels the same.
More oft than not you’ll find him ensconced beneath sheets, a blanket, a comforter–even a mattress pad. He’ll burrow in and there he’ll stay the whole day through; occasionally I’ll pop in to make sure he’s still alive. But other than that, our days go on quite as usual.
‘As usual’ includes cleaning day, which he loathes. Specifically, he despises vacuuming. Not only is the ‘growling machine’ loud, it’s capacious, more than able to hold an innocent kit–and, by ‘innocent kit’ we mean the Intern. Obviously. The vacuum, it seems, has it out for him. No matter how I argue in all these years it’s never actually devoured him, he’s quick to retort, “There’s always a first time.”
True enough, I suppose.
So each week, when I flip the switch to vacuum, the Intern jumps from his perch, under my bed. When I round the corner to the bedroom, he scurries, ears back, belly-to-the-ground, into the living room, behind the sofa, where he teeters on the brink of a full blown nervous breakdown.
Last week, however, he made an intriguing discovery. When nestled under the comforter, toasty and snug as a bug in a rug, the ‘growling machine’ holds no sway. He’s found his very own cloak of invisibility.
Also last week, I accepted a consulting gig that’s basically a full-time job–forty hours a week, on-site–for up to six months. I start on Thursday.
I’ve not actually worked in an office (outside my own) for four years. Being a consulting job I still need to keep in touch with clients, accept additional projects, etc. And let’s not forget the projects all my own, to which I’ve committed. To say the next few months could be insane may very well be the understatement of the year.
That said, today I should be working diligently to get my act together. Alas, I’m choosing to cast a blind eye toward all I have to do. Instead, I shall frolic. Lunch and movie with Kristi, here I come.
What can I say? Sometimes a cloak of invisibility really is the only answer.
