Soda tasting commenced over the weekend.
Amongst my favorites this go-around: Fentimans. Don’t you just love the bottle design? Sigh.
The story goes, in 1905, Thomas Fentiman, an English iron puddler, acquired a unique recipe for brewed ginger beer as collateral on a defaulted loan. Fentiman began brewing the ginger beer, storing it in handmade stone jars that were stamped with the image of his pet dog, ‘Fearless,’ and selling them door-to-door. Over time, the business grew and flavors were added.
For instance, I sampled the Rose Lemonade–perfect for a garden party, or wedding reception–and the Dandelion & Burdock, which was really quite delightful for a lazy summer afternoon.
Did you know, back in the day, Dandelion & Burdock “elixirs” were used for liver detoxification? Oh, they all boasted something. Colas, for instance, were touted as the cure-all for headaches.
Today, of course, laws protect us from such lofty claims. Though I do know of someone who regularly buys Fentimans soda for her grandson who suffers from migraines. She’s a firm believer in its healing properties.
Pssst! There’s only a few days left for Isabelle’s Kickstarter: Just Baked Boise! She was only halfway there at the start of the weekend–now she’s a little over a $1,000 from her goal. So close. If you haven’t already done so, do be a part. After all, as Walt Disney once said, “It’s kinda fun to do the impossible.”
