Oh, the intrigue

For Easter I cut a few blossoms of the Lenten Rose (Hellebore Orientalis, as it were) to float lazily in a glass dish. So lovely.

But the strangest thing–every time I leave the house, I come home to flowers strewn every which way, and a bowl bereft of water.

I’ve interviewed the staff at great length; no one is talking. Suspiciously, they also refuse to make eye contact. Interesting.

I guess sometimes you’ve just got to live on the edge–when the opportunity arises, you’ve just got to take it. It’s all part of the intrigue. So that’s my wish for you: may you happen upon the perfect indulgence; may your days be filled with such delight, you feel as though you’re getting away with something you shouldn’t.

. . . a weekend of grand adventure to you, my friends!

A good Friday to you

Today, you may have noticed, is Good Friday–otherwise known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, even Long Friday. Personally, that last one seems most appropriate, especially for the one whom we celebrate. Even those of us who observe Easter with great pomp and circumstance, tend to gloss over the painful details of Friday. Who wants to mix sadness with joy? Gore with brightly colored eggs?

I’ve long mixed the two myself–figuratively speaking, of course.

In elementary school we were assigned the creation of Easter works of art. There we sat, surrounded by crate paper, Crayolas, and Elmer’s glue, furiously cutting out magic with each snip of the plastic scissors. When all was said and done, we hung them on the wall. As you may imagine, mine stood out. It was three crosses on a hill–with Easter eggs hidden in the grass, below. Obviously, my teacher never fathomed such a blatant nod to faith, for she pulled me aside and informed me the error of my ways.

Funny thing, my Sunday School teacher most likely would have reprimanded me for mixing eggs and Golgatha.

Yet to me, faith in things above, cannot help but mingle with that here below. For that is life. And life? Well, that’s the whole point of Easter.

So to you, dear friends, I wish glorious days ahead. Whether you fill baskets, hunt for eggs, or worship; whether you do a little of each or nothing at all, I wish a weekend kissed with mercy, wrapped in love, and filled with peace.

Happy Easter weekend to you and yours!

Mmm...tasty

Whoops, I did it again

As mentioned last Friday, I tried a new cake recipe for my aunt and uncle’s visit–Rum-Scented Marble Cake. So good! And I’m so glad because, seriously, that was two hours of my life I’ll never get back.

It came out of the pan perfectly, a light golden brown, with a scent so delectable it could bring a tear to your eye. The one dilemma was the marbling. I’ve never done a marbled cake before, and for some reason I could not visualize what the instructions were trying to say. So, I Panicked . . .

Ere go, my marbling waffled between an image of a horseshoe and an Omega. Awesome, really. Of course, I’ll never, in a million years, be able to recreate this look–so do enjoy it now.

I guess you might say from the looks of things, that was one lucky cake . . . or maybe the end of me. Considering that puppy contained three sticks of butter and seven eggs–and diets and health issues kept guests from taking any home, hence, propelling me to eat what remained–well, let’s just say it might not have been the best.

No, let’s go with a lucky cake, and a sweet ending to the month of March. {Yes, I can always find a good excuse to eat dessert. It’s a gift.}

So here’s to you, my friends. One more month of 2012 draws to a close, another begins. And it all happens in one little weekend. So make it good.

. . . sweet surprises and happy days to you!

Walking on the sunshine

Would you look at that sky of blue? It paid visit yesterday. And since the wind took the day off, even when the clouds gained ground, it remained warm. So I threw open the windows, penned a letter, and listened to the birds sing ‘Jesus Loves Me’ {their favorite song, you know–a little tidbit picked up when I was little}. I even managed to clean the oven without complaint. That’s what lovely weather will do for a person.

Better yet, they’re calling for more of the same in the coming days. Sigh.

Speaking of which, any plans?

None for me, thank you. My aunt and uncle will be coming through on their way back from vacation. Since they’ll be coming over for dinner on Sunday evening, I found a new cake recipe. Do wish me luck.

Other than that, I’ll simply see what the days have in store.

I hope much the same for you–bright sunny days, open to any adventure that may arise.

. . . warm weekend wishes to you, my friends!

Nothing but blue skies from now on

I’m not sure about you, but here in the United States, we’ll be springing forward Sunday. Seems innocent enough–simply set the clock ahead one hour. But as time changes go, this one hits below the belt.  A month from now someone will comment on the fact I’ve been yawning incessantly; to which I’ll have no recourse but to reply, time change

Of course, there’s a silver lining to this particular conundrum. A time change such as this can mean but one thing: spring is on the way. Spring, my friends!

Let’s just take a moment to simmer on that thought, shall we? Sigh.

That said, shovel that snow, batten down the hatches if you have to–just remember, this too shall pass. Days of nothing but blue skies and sunshine, warmth and the songs of birds are on their way; may the anticipation get you through, until they arrive.

. . . a bright weekend to you, my friends!
