Mark your calendars, my friends: on this day (March 27th), 1860, M.L. Byrn was granted a patent on his corkscrew. He was not the first to patent a corkscrew; he was definitely not the last. From his “covered gimlet screw with a ‘T’ handle” this fabulous invention has evolved in both form and function. So let’s raise a glass–to all those who have made opening a bottle of wine almost as much fun as drinking it.
