I worked partway through college as a receptionist for the university’s counseling & testing center. Oh, the stories I could tell–like the evening the head counselor decided to leave a crazed client . . . alone in the office . . . with me. When I questioned his sanity the following day, he retorted, “Well, I figured you were safer than I would be; even if he pulled a gun, you could have ran–he would have to be a sharp shooter to actually kill you.” Oh, right. So glad you thought it through.
There were good times, too. Like the day one of the counselors decided to giveaway some of her books. Most, of course, were related to the study of psychology. Blah, no thank you. Then, I saw it–a slim volume on attempting to navigate the many dangers of the 20th century. A satire, I grabbed it up like a caffeine induced couponer on Black Friday. Who cares if the 20th century had come and gone? Certainly not I. Unfortunately, I can no longer recall the name of the book–pity, for it struck me hilarious every time I read it. Not everyone sensed the humor; so naturally, I tried to convert them by reading a bit here and there. Take the game quiz. Q: Which of the following games does not pose a risk? Pickup Sticks, Jacks, Tiddlywinks, etc. The answer? They’re all full of peril. While playing Tiddlywinks, for example, a rogue wink could fly up and poke your eye out.
And that was about the time they would roll their eyes and silently walk away, leaving me to chortle all by my lonesome.
Whatever.
To this day I cannot see Tiddlywinks {or Tiddledy Winks, as the case may be} without smirking. Needless to say, it was a good day when I happened upon the item, above.
Don’t you just love the simplistic way the product is styled? Also, The Cathedral specializes in “found curiosities” . . . a good shoppe, indeed!
Hah, I don't think I've ever played any of those games but I'm glad you were able to see the sense of humor in the book, even though it was a bit ancient 🙂
My recent post Surrogate sibling No. 1
Yes, well, sadly, it doesn’t take much for me! 🙂
