Today my baby brother turns 35–thirty five!
Seems a bit unklikely, to me. After all, it was only a few years ago we celebrated his first birthday. It was a pretty big deal, you know, the fact he made it to one. Halfway there he was diagnosed with spinal meningitis. Day upon day he lay in a dark hospital room–the slightest sound or glimmer of light causing excruciating pain. Even then, he was too sick to cry. But he made it out alive.
So when the anniversary of that first year rolled around, we had ourselves a to-do. Convening at my grandparents–mom and dad, aunts and uncles, grandparents and cousins–we ate cake and opened gifts all around. And we said an extra prayer of thanks for a blessing we did not deserve.
I cannot express how I wish we could celebrate together, like the good old days. Alas, that darn ocean always gets in the way.
Instead I’ll send a long-distance greeting to the greatest brother of them all. I hope your day is happy; I pray your every wish is granted.
To the rest of you, well, I wish happiness to you, as well. So let’s all congratulate us with another cup of tea . . .
A very merry {un}birthday to you!
How scary for you and your parents – and how wonderful that things turned out well. I agree – that was definitely an occasion to celebrate!! Please allow me to wish your brother a very Happy Birthday as well.
My recent post Taxidermy
Well, scary for my parents at any rate. It was all rather annoying for me. I was 5 and still recovering from the blow that I had a brother (I had specifically requested a sister). Then he had to go and get sick and hog all the attention. (Apparently, I actually said to my mom, 'You're never that nice to me when I'm sick.' 🙂 Good times . . .
Thank you so for the birthday wishes–I shall pass them along!
Aww this is so sweet – happy birthday to your brother!
