Did you know, April 24, 1833 a patent was granted for the first soda fountain–can you believe they’ve been around that long?
It’s a great invention, sure. Who doesn’t love the sweet refreshment of an ice cold soda? But I’m convinced, it’s the people with whom you share that soda that makes it so very delicious.
I’ve seen it in the tales my of my grandmother. When she was in high school, the minute that last bell rang, she and her girlfriends would head straight to Moore’s Bus Depot, where they’d sidle up to the soda fountain for a fresh chocolate Coke or–if they were lucky enough to scrounge up 25 cents–a hot fudge sundae. There they’d finish off the school day (and subsequent treats) with gossip and laughter, before heading home to chores and studies.
I’ve seen it in the retro diners we’ve visited–my favorite being the time my mom ordered a lime Coca-Cola and the waiter said, “Oh, I’m sorry ma’am. We don’t serve mixed drinks.” Wha. . .?! We’re still not entirely sure what that fellow thought she said (wine Coke, perhaps?), but it made us laugh. And my mother, the lush, has yet to live it down.
See? It’s the mixture of good refreshment and good friends that makes for the best of times. Which, it just so happens, is the very thing I’m wishing for you.
As you head into the weekend I hope you’ll splurge on a sweet treat. Better yet, I hope it’s shared with those you love.
